R. Milton Johnson is chairman and chief executive officer of Nashville, Tennessee-based HCA Healthcare, one of the nation’s leading providers of healthcare services with 178 hospitals and approximately 1,800 sites of care, including surgery centers, freestanding ERs, urgent care centers and physician clinics, in 20 states and the United Kingdom. A $44 billion company, HCA Healthcare and its 249,000 employees provide approximately five percent of all U.S. hospital services.
Under Johnson’s leadership, HCA Healthcare has advanced clinical quality throughout its hospitals, using data from its more than 28 million patient encounters annually to identify leading clinical practices and continually improve patient care and save lives.
A more than 36-year veteran of HCA Healthcare, Johnson has served in various financial and senior management positions for the company, including head of the Tax Department, senior vice president and controller, and executive vice president and chief financial officer. Johnson became president of HCA Healthcare in 2011 and was appointed CEO in January 2014. He was elected chairman on December 31 of that year.
Johnson provides leadership to the healthcare industry and Nashville community through his service on various boards and organizations. Currently, he serves as chairman of the Nashville Health Care Council and The HCA Foundation, and is immediate past chair of the Federation of American Hospitals and Nashville Chamber of Commerce. He serves on the American Heart Association’s CEO Roundtable and is a member of The Business Council. He also serves on the boards of the Center for Medical Interoperability and the United Way of Metropolitan Nashville.
A graduate of Belmont University, Johnson also is a member of his alma mater’s Board of Trustees.
