Kathi Whalen, J.D., Senior Vice President and Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer

Kathi Whalen is senior vice president and chief ethics and compliance officer of Nashville, Tennessee-based HCA Healthcare, one of the nation’s leading providers of healthcare services. In her position, she is responsible for HCA Healthcare’s Ethics and Compliance, Regulatory Compliance, Information Protection & Security, and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion departments. Kathi is also chair of HCA Healthcare’s Sustainability Steering Committee.


Prior to assuming her current role in January 2019, Kathi served as vice president of ethics and compliance, overseeing the Program Development and Compliance Program Assessment teams.


Prior to joining HCA Healthcare in January 1998, Kathi served as associate counsel to President Clinton with responsibility for the White House’s ethics program. Kathi began her government service in the ethics division of the General Counsel’s Office at the U.S. Commerce Department. Prior to that, she practiced labor and employment law in Dayton, Ohio.


Kathi serves on the boards of the HCA Healthcare Foundation, Project Transformation Tennessee and Thistle Farms. She also serves on the Advisory Board of the Edward C. Kennedy Center for Business Ethics at Belmont University.


Kathi received her B.A. in History from the College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio, and her J.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Law, Nashville, Tennessee.
